The 2014 Ouray Ice Festival Clinic Schedule will be available in mid-November.  In the meantime, feel free to browse last year’s schedule by navigating the tabs above to get a feel for what will be on tap for next year!

San Juan Mountain Guides is the Official Concessionaire of the Ouray Ice Park, and each year in collaboration with the Ouray Ice Park Inc., organizes over 70 unique, informative, cutting-edge ice and mixed climbing clinics and seminars.  Each clinic/seminar is taught by a mixture of professional athletes and guides – each of whom represent the very best in knowledge and instruction about the clinics we have scheduled them to teach.  The clinics are provided and sponsored by vendors such as Black Diamond, Outdoor Research, La Sportiva, The North Face, Patagonia, Mammut, Scarpa, Gore-Tex, and many many more.

How to Shop the Clinics

There are two ways to shop for clinics:

1 Cart Method

Use this method if you are going to be purchasing multiple clinics and seminars.  Click “Book this Clinic” where indicated and it will add that product to your cart.  Go through each day and add the clinics or seminars you want to attend, then when you are done click on “View Cart” and go through the registration process.

2 Single Clinic Registration

If you only plan to sign up for one clinic or seminar, then you can do so using the single clinic registration process.  This is also where the descriptions of all the clinics can be viewed.  Schedule and descriptions of clinics will be available in mid-November.

About the Ouray Ice Festival

The Ouray Ice Festival, held each year in January in Ouray, CO, is an eclectic gathering of ice climbers, gear manufacturers, and ice climbing enthusiasts. The international Festival was first held in January 1996 and now is widely recognized as the premier event of its kind. Each year, familiar faces return to climb, socialize, test out the latest equipment, and watch the pros power their way up the latest competition route.

For the past sixteen years the Ouray Ice Festival has been the world’s premier ice climbing event.  This annual gathering is attended by ice climbers from around the world, as well as industry sponsors, inspiring speakers, and the world’s top exhibition climbers. Festival events are held in and around the Ouray Ice Park, located in the Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado, as well as various other venues around town. The event is staffed by the Park’s board of directors, its professional staff, and a cadre of over 200 dedicated volunteers. The festival is the primary fundraiser for Park maintenance and operations. The industry leaders that sponsor the festival not only support the Park itself, but also gain access to a passionate audience of over 3,000 outdoor enthusiasts.

I wanted to let you let you know about our recent trip to Ouray. We have used San Juan Mountain Guides every year since 2001 for our ice climbing about at the Ice Park and in the surrounding backcountry areas. This was our first year at the Ice Festival and what a great time it was! We know that every year SJMG will teach us and test us on the best climbs in the area. Ice Festival Clinics Information

• The 2014 Festival Clinics will be held January 10, 11, & 12, 2014.

• Clinic Schedules are available by navigating the tabs on this page, i.e. the “Fri. AM” tab corresponds to all the clinics that are available for registration on that day – Friday Morning, and so on and so forth for Saturday and Sunday.

• Online Clinic Registration will begin at 0900 MST on Thursday November 14, 2013.

• All registrations must be done online on this website using the secure registration process.  Simply shop which clinics you would like to buy, click the “Register Now” button, follow the prompts, submit your payment and you are registered.  Registrations are non-refundable and subject to availability.  Once a clinic or seminar fills with the max number of participants it will be sold out.

• If you are a Ouray Ice Park Individual Member for the 2013/2014 Season, you will receive $10 off each clinic or seminar.  There will be two prices to choose from during the check out process.  Ice Park Members should choose the “OIP Member” price.  All others should select the Non-OIP Members Price.  Selection of the OIP Members Price is on the climber’s honor code system!!

• You will register and pay online, then receive a confirmation via email shortly afterwards. This means you registered for the clinics listed in that email. If you need to make changes to your registration, please contact us at icefestclinics@mtnguide.net and provide your order confirmation number.

• There will be an additional Final Clinic Information email sent out to all clinic participants one week prior to the start of the Ice Fest on January 2, 2014.

Clinic & Seminar Descriptions

Clinics are 2.5 hours long. There will be between 6-8 participants in each climbing clinic. Up to 10 in non-climbing clinics. These will be instructed by one Sponsor Athlete per clinic.

Seminars are 5.5 hours long. There will be 8 participants in each seminar. Seminars will be instructed by one Sponsor Athlete, there will also be a SJMG Guide assigned to each Seminar.

Clinics are $49, Seminars are $99.  Backcountry full day seminars are $149.  Ouray Ice Park Members will receive $10 off each clinic or seminar they register for.

Clinics will be held in the Schoolroom, Trestle, Kids Wall, Popsicle, Scottish Gullies areas. Seminars will be in South Park and the Sh!thouse Wall areas. All of these areas will be closed to the public and competitors all day Friday and Saturday, and until 12pm on Sunday.

At the Ice Fest:

Make sure you have all your gear together at least 15 minutes before the start of your clinic. To get a Festival gear card to demo gear from sponsors, go to the Festival Information Booth with your Driver’s License and Credit Card.  Once you have your Gear Card, go to the different Sponsors to demo all of the required gear.  We recommend you bring your own gear as well if you have it, especially harness and helmet.

Once you have all your gear together, go to the appropriate clinic sponsor tent. I.e. if you registered for Clinic #3 Intermediate Ice. La Sportiva. Wil Mayo. FRI 0900 – Go To the La Sportiva tent at 0845 with your gear, ready to sign a release form and head out.
