The flexibility of our Private Rock Guiding and Instruction makes this one of our most popular trip options in the summer.  There are a wide variety of rock climbing areas in Ouray and Durango, as well as a few classic multi-pitch climbs on which to test your ability.

Rock climbing in Ouray and Durango is a great option for anyone looking for some high adventure!  No experience is necessary, and we have access to exceptional climbing terrain for people of all ages and ability levels. We offer discounts for families and organized groups of 4 or more, so please call ahead to book your rock climbing trip with us while you’re in Ouray or Durango!

Rotary Park Wall

The Rotary Park Wall is a family-friendly crag with many options. Located just minutes from out office; this area will be sure to make your rock climbing experience in Ouray a memorable one!


Pool Wall

The Pool Wall sits right above the Hot Springs Pool in Ouray. It is home to loads of great climbs for every ability level. We climb there a bunch with families and individuals looking for excellent climbing in a beautiful setting with a short approach. The main wall sports lots of harder bolted routes, but also a handful of more moderate traditional climbs.

Durango Climbing Options

1X-Rock

Beginner – Intermediate Level Climbing

Perfect for those who possess little or no outdoor climbing experience, as well as those who do. This is a great venue to learn the basics of rock climbing and have a lot of fun in the process. Half day climbs start at 8:30 am and 1:00 pm. Full day climbs start at 8:30 am.

2East Animas

Intermediate – Advanced Level Climbing 

If you’re looking for more of a challenge, then the East Animas climbing area is for you. The climbs are longer and have a wider array of difficulties, and we even have a few multi-pitch climbs to really give you that airy feeling! Half day climbs start at 8:30 am and 1:00 pm. Full day climbs start at 8:30 am.

Rock Climbing Equipment

  • Clothes: for warm weather
  • Water: 2 liters or more/ person
  • Sunscreen
  • Closed-toe shoes: for the approach hike; we will provide your climbing shoes
  • Rain jacket
  • Food & snacks
  • Backpack: to put all this stuff in, plus the harness, helmet, and shoes we provide you

Prerequisites

Ouray, Colorado: Getting Here

Ouray is located in the SW corner of Colorado, approximately 30 minutes south of Montrose. Known as “The Switzerland of America”, the town of Ouray is a vibrant outdoor oriented community. All local businesses are very friendly to the ice climbers who flock each winter to climb in the Ouray Ice Park and surrounding areas.

Flights: The best option for flying to the area is to fly into Montrose, CO. Many airline options exist, and most connections originate from Denver, CO. It is also possible to fly into Durango, CO, Telluride, CO, or Albuquerque, NM. It may be necessary to rent a car and drive to Ouray if you’d like to fly into one of either of these airports.

Driving: Below are some approximate driving times if you’d like to drive to Ouray. If you plan on renting a car, please consider the winter weather when selecting your vehicle and at a minimum choose something that offers either front wheel or all-wheel drive.

  • Montrose, CO: 45 mins
  • Durango, CO: 2 hours
  • Denver, CO: 6 hours
  • Albuquerque, NM: 4.5 hours
  • Salt Lake City, UT: 6 hours
