Ski Touring in the South Tyrol
*2023 Season Note* –Â SJMG is heading back to Italy with IFMGA Guides Patrick Ormond and Nate Disser!!
SJMG is going to Europe in the Spring of 2022! Join us for perhaps the finest ski tour in Europe – the well known Ortler Circuit, and check out the most luxurious huts in the Alps. We’ll spend 7 days exploring the glaciers and peaks of the Ortler Region in Northern Italy.
The Ortler itself is a major Italian peak straddling the Autstrian-Italian border. But the ski tour is more in the mountain group east of the Ortler. Accessed via Solda, Santa Caterina, or the Val Martello, the Ortler is another dynamic tour without a strict itinerary. Our flexible and time-friendly program allow us to ski where the conditions are most favorable, moving around the area to descend classic lines and peaks throughout the range. Classics include the Cevedale, the Punta San Matteo and the magnificent Gran Zebru.
There are numerous touring options on the sub 4000m peaks throughout the range. The itinerary calls for a couple of days at each hut we stay at to take advantage of optimal conditions and descent options. Comfortable huts and excellent food round out this iconic ski trip.
 Your Guides for the Traverse
American Mountain Guide Patrick Ormond will be leading our ski programs on the Ortler Circuit. Pat grew up climbing and skiing from a young age in the Pacific Northwest. After school, he moved to Utah to explore the West, and began to guide and teach avalanche courses. Now, as a fully certified AMGA/IFMGA Mountain Guide, he get’s to work and play (they usually go hand in hand) around the world. Pat lives in Ouray and the San Juan mountains, but you can also find him in the Tetons, Alaska, Canada, and Europe. SJMG Owner and Director Nate Disser, also an AMGA/IFMGA Mountain Guide, will be joining Pat on this trip as well!

Coffee is the lifeblood of champions. We highly encourage the consumption of coffee on our programs. The darker the better. |

We recommend wide mouth Nalgene (or similar) water bottles for the majority of our programs. Two 1 liter bottles is the standard for days in the mountains. |
Bottle Insulators | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
Insulating water bottle parkas are recommended in the winter months, for ice climbing or cold weather alpine trips. |
Stuff Sacks | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
Stuff sacks are a great way to organize your gear in your pack and help to keep things tidy in a variety of ways. A great addition to any of our programs. |
Personal Food | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
Lunch begins when breakfast ends and ends when dinner begins. Bring what you like to eat and consider the length, relative difficulty, weight, and other factors when deciding what to bring in the mountains with you. A variety is always best. Don't be afraid of Mr. T. |
Sunglasses | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
A good pair of wrap around sunglasses are an essential item for all of our trips. When the sun shines brightly on fresh snow in the mountains your eyes will thank you for a quality pair of shades. Looking good is important too. |

Lip balm is important to bring on all trips. SPF 15 or higher is recommended. |
Headlamp | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|

The under-the-helmet hood and full-length zipper let you regulate temperature on the go, so you don’t find yourself overheating a half hour into the day. A slim cut helps the CoEfficient Hoody fit comfortably under your shell, and with a redsigned, trim fit, this layer takes up little space in your pack. |
Ski Touring Jacket | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
Sweating one minute and freezing the next is only fun when you’re jumping from a hot tub into the snow and back—not while you’re skiing. If the words “ski season” make you think about moving uphill as much as downhill, the Skyward Jacket speaks your language. Air-permeable AscentShell technology keeps you cool and dry while skinning up, and keeps the speed-generated windchill out after you peel off your skins and drop in for the descent. |

---|---|---|
Same spirit, same guts, and same award-winning hybrid-mapped design of the Cathode Hooded Jacket, minus the sleeves and hood. An insulated vest is an optional item on our programs but we do think vests offer excellent flexible layering options in a variety of circumstances, weather conditions, and trip types. |

Ski Repair Kit | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
A backcountry ski repair kit is well worth the time to put together. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it! |
Training & Follow Up Programs
As always, being in excellent physical shape is an important component of our our programs. A good mixture of cardiovascular fitness, muscular fitness, and especially core strength will help you to maximize the potential rewards that are possible on a great climbing trip.
Before Your Trip
Strengthening your core is one of the best investments you can make for your overall fitness level. Cardiovascular activities such as running, swimming, and cycling arealso  great to build heart and lung endurance. Taking day hikes with your loaded backpack at a local park will help train your legs for the mileage you will do in the mountains.
