The OPUS Hut Backcountry Skiing

The Ophir Pass Ultimate Ski (OPUS) Hut is a high alpine backcountry lodge located near Ophir pass, in the Northern San Juan Mountains. Built on the southern slopes of 13,666 ft. Lookout Peak, the solar-powered hut receives abundant sunshine.
Located in the high mountains between the famous ski towns of Silverton and Telluride, this hut is surrounded by awesome tree runs, wide open bowls, and steep, craggy faces. This program is for intermediate to advanced backcountry skiers and boarders looking for a once in a lifetime ski trip, all while living in the luxury of a beautiful, fully catered hut.
While you are at the hut you can focus on the things that really matter – skiing great snow, enjoying hearty meals, and spending time with your friends. Food, bedding, games, and even hut slippers await you once you arrive to your mountain retreat.
Private Ski Guiding with The Local Experts
Our OPUS Hut Ski Programs are arranged on a private basis and due to the increasing popularity of the hut, we recommend making reservations well in advance to secure space for you and/or your group. Our guides know the terrain around the OPUS Hut and the surrounding San Juan Mountains better than anyone, insuring that you will receive not only cutting edge guiding and professional trip leadership, but also detailed knowledge of the terrain and up-to-date snowpack stability analysis.

OPUS Hut Skiing Itinerary
Itinerary Note
OPUS Hut Skiing Programs can be scheduled for a minimum of 2 days and 1 night. However, we recommend that you and your group consider a minimum of 3 days and 2 nights for the trip to provide flexibility in the terrain and with the itinerary. Longer trips are also available. We can also arrange to meet you at the trailhead or in Silverton if it is more convenient for you than stopping by our office in Ouray.
Day 1
Travel to the Ophir Pass road trailhead and tour up to the hut. It takes approximately 2 – 3 hours to tour to the hut. Drop off gear and settle into the hut, then head out for a ski tour. Return in the late afternoon for and apre’ ski soup and dinner.
Day 2
Breakfast at the hut and then ski tour from the hut. Options include descents in the Paradise Basin, the Sound of Music, or skiing around the hut. Conditions and group dynamics will drive our decision making. Return to the hut for soup and dinner.
Day 3
Breakfast at the hut then another morning ski tour. We’ll return to the hut in the early afternoon and then descend back to the trailhead.

Training & Follow Up Programs
As always, being in excellent physical shape is an important component of our our programs. A good mixture of cardiovascular fitness, muscular fitness, and especially core strength will help you to maximize the potential rewards that are possible on a great climbing trip.
Participants should feel competent and comfortable on “Black” rated runs at ski resorts. Participants should also be in excellent physical condition. We recommend that participants arrive in Durango at least 1 full day prior to traveling with us in the San Juan high country.
Before Your Trip
Skiing and/or squats: do it. Cardiovascular activities such as running, swimming, and cycling are great to build heart and lung endurance. Taking day hikes with your loaded backpack at a local park will help train your legs for the mileage you will do in the mountains.
Follow Up Ski Programs
Ouray, Colorado: Getting Here
Ouray is located in the SW corner of Colorado, approximately 30 minutes south of Montrose. Known as “The Switzerland of America”, the town of Ouray is a vibrant outdoor oriented community. All local businesses are very friendly to the ice climbers who flock each winter to climb in the Ouray Ice Park and surrounding areas.
 The best option for flying to the area is to fly into Montrose, CO. Many airline options exist, and most connections originate from Denver, CO, however, many airlines now offer direct flights into Montrose – especially during the summer and winter months.
It is also possible to fly into Grand Junction, Durango, Telluride, or Denver CO. It may be necessary to rent a car and drive to Ouray if you’d like to fly into one of these airports.
 Below are some approximate driving times if you’d like to drive to Ouray. If you plan on renting a car, please consider the winter weather when selecting your vehicle and at a minimum choose something that offers either front wheel or all-wheel drive.

- Denver, CO: 5.5 hours

Registration & Cancellation
Advance Registration is required for this program. You have the option to either call our office and register via phone or utilize our secure Online Reservation System. All participants must read and sign an Assumption of Risks/Liability Waiver and agree to our Reservations and Cancellations Policies.
