Backcountry Touring: Level 1 Itinerary
Day 0
Meet at SJMG office at 1600 for trip intro and finalize paperwork. We prefer to meet on this day to make sure that everyone has their gear prepped and ready to go for the next day, as we will be heading out into the backcountry early in the morning. Stay in a hotel in Ouray.
Day 1
Meet at the SJMG office at 0730 and we then drive to Red Mountain Pass to begin the day’s instruction focusing on the topics listed in the previous tab. Full day ski tour near Red Mountain pass where we cover a variety of topics including Skinning, Uphill Track Setting, and Ascension Techniques, Downhill Powder Snow Skiing Techniques, Essential Backcountry Touring Equipment, Trip and Tour Planning and more.
Our goal will be to find the best possible ski descent given the conditions and group dynamics. Return to Ouray in the afternoon.
Day 2
A continuation of the previous day in terms of skill acquisition, today we will select a specific ski tour objective that represents a good collective effort of planning. Participants will be asked to evaluate conditions and make a few terrain choices, as well as continue to practice and demonstrate good track setting for the group and more. By the end of the two days you will be ready to participate in a REC Level 1 Avalanche Course and continue your education in backcountry skiing! Many course participants choose to add an additional day of private skiing the following day. Come and join us for a truly unforgettable course that will impress upon you just how incredibly fun it is to be out in the wilderness on your skis!

---|---|---|
Coffee is the lifeblood of champions. We highly encourage the consumption of coffee on our programs. The darker the better. |
Water Bottles | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
We recommend wide mouth Nalgene (or similar) water bottles for the majority of our programs. Two 1 liter bottles is the standard for days in the mountains. |
Bottle Insulators | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
Insulating water bottle parkas are recommended in the winter months, for ice climbing or cold weather alpine trips. |
Stuff Sacks | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
Stuff sacks are a great way to organize your gear in your pack and help to keep things tidy in a variety of ways. A great addition to any of our programs. |
Personal Food | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
Lunch begins when breakfast ends and ends when dinner begins. Bring what you like to eat and consider the length, relative difficulty, weight, and other factors when deciding what to bring in the mountains with you. A variety is always best. Don't be afraid of Mr. T. |
Sunglasses | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
A good pair of wrap around sunglasses are an essential item for all of our trips. When the sun shines brightly on fresh snow in the mountains your eyes will thank you for a quality pair of shades. Looking good is important too. |

Lip balm is important to bring on all trips. SPF 15 or higher is recommended. |
Headlamp | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|

A slim cut helps the CoEfficient Hoody fit comfortably under your shell, and with a redsigned, trim fit, this layer takes up little space in your pack. |
Ski Touring Jacket | Description | Guide's Pick |
---|---|---|
Sweating one minute and freezing the next is only fun when you’re jumping from a hot tub into the snow and back—not while you’re skiing. If the words “ski season” make you think about moving uphill as much as downhill, the Skyward Jacket speaks your language. Air-permeable AscentShell technology keeps you cool and dry while skinning up, and keeps the speed-generated windchill out after you peel off your skins and drop in for the descent. |

Same spirit, same guts, and same award-winning hybrid-mapped design of the Cathode Hooded Jacket, minus the sleeves and hood. An insulated vest is an optional item on our programs but we do think vests offer excellent flexible layering options in a variety of circumstances, weather conditions, and trip types. |

---|---|---|
A backcountry ski repair kit is well worth the time to put together. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it! |
Training & Follow Up Programs
As always, being in excellent physical shape is an important component of our our programs. A good mixture of cardiovascular fitness, muscular fitness, and especially core strength will help you to maximize the potential rewards that are possible on a great climbing trip.
Specific to Ice Climbing – check out our Pre-Season Training Tips for helpful info on how you can prepare for the forearm pump!
Before Your Trip
Strengthening your core is one of the best investments you can make for your overall fitness level. Cardiovascular activities such as running, swimming, and cycling arealso  great to build heart and lung endurance. Taking day hikes with your loaded backpack at a local park will help train your legs for the mileage you will do in the mountains.
